ITINERARY IN DETAILS:
LUANGPRABANG CITY & TEMPLES
Visit Vat Visoun, the site of an impressive stupa, That Makmo, stylistically more Srilankalese than Lao. Then walk to the nearby Vat Aham, which is one of the city’s major tutelary shrines, dedicated to Deveta Luang (spirit) Pu Gneu Ya Gneu (ancestors). Climb Vat Phousi hill for an outstanding view over the city. Continue to visit Vat Sene and Vat Xieng Thong, considered as the most beautiful temple. The sim of the Vat represents the classic Luang Prabang temple architecture with roofs that sweep low to the ground. In the compound stand several small chapels housing bronze Buddha images, which were displayed in Paris in 1911. Near the East gate stands the Royal Funeral Chapel. Inside are an impressive 12-meter high funeral chariot and various funeral urns of each Royal Family’s member. The gilt panel on the exterior of the chapel depicts a semi-erotic episode from Ramayana. Next, drive to visit Ban Phanom, a weaving village populated by Thai Lu.

Then board a traditional riverboat for a trip upstream the Mekong River to visit the famous caves of Pak Ou housing thousands of statues representing Lord Buddha.
Picnic lunch at a bamboo cottage overlooking the confluence between the Mekong and Nam Ou rivers.
Return to Luang Prabang by boat with a stopover at the village of Ban Xhang Hai, which produces local rice wine. Continue by car to visit Ban Phanom, a weaving village populated by Thai Lu that originally came from Sipsongpanna in Southern China.
KHOUANG XI WATERFALL
In the morning, drive to visit Ban Xongja (Hmong village) followed by Ban Nayang (Thai Lu village). After lunch, take a scenic boat trip on the Nam Ou River before returning to Luang Prabang.
Depart by road to the town-ship of Nongkhio. En-route, a stop is made to visit the caves which housed dozens of people made homeless and seeking refuge during the war. You will receive an introduction to Lao textiles by expert crafts-people, and then enjoy a Lao traditional lunch with cooking instruction. Enjoy a scenic trip on the Nam Ou River before returning to Luang Prabang.
NAM OU RIVER
Travel by car to the ethnic minority village of Ban Nayang (Thai Lu). Cruise back to Luang Prabang along the Nam Ou River. Stopover at the famous Pak Ou caves followed by a picnic lunch near-by. Continue your cruise down the Mekong River to Luang Prabang.
TIGER TRAIL EXCURSION
Pick-up at your Luang Prabang hotel and depart at 8:30 AM. We will start our adventure trip with a minibus drive, which takes us through rice paddies and dense forest before arriving in our elephant camp. This is where we start our elephant ride. The elephant trail goes through jungle, past teak plantations and rice paddies, and gives wonderful views of the river valley and the mountain chain.
After a one and half hour ride we will reach the Tad Sae Waterfall - crystal clear waters cascade over multi-level limestone formations, forming pools surrounded by tropical trees and plants. An ideal place for swimming and relaxing. This beautiful place cannot be reached by road.
Here we have lunch before we start our trekking excursion. Leaving the Tad Sae Waterfall we enter a lost world of a grander scale dominated by dense jungle, soaring limestone rock faces, and flourishing ferns.
Edging forward along a narrow track, we ascend to our destination, the Khmu village of Ban Houay Fai. Welcomed by the shy yet curious dwellers, we enjoy a unique encounter in this unspoiled village. The Lao Theung (Upland Lao), are people who live on mid-altitude mountain slopes between 300m and 900m above sea level. The Khmu are the largest group of Lao Theung and have one of the lowest standards of living. For the most part they are farmers who grow mountain rice, coffee, tobacco and cotton. Their villages are built near streams. Their houses have dirt floors, like those of the Hmong, but have crossed roof-beams. Traditionally they are animists.
We will leave the village on a single trail - our sights are filled with farmers working the land, forests of teakwood, distant mountain vistas, and the smiles of passing locals curious about their observers. We return to our camp, crossing the Nam Khan River by water taxi
