The folk song of southern Vietnam, “Don ca tai tu” has appeared and become popular since the late nineteenth century. It is a folk art combining music and singing. The instruments adapted to this musical style are the moon-lute (đàn kìm), the stringed instrument (dàn cò), another with plucked strings of the family of table-top zither (đàn tranh) and the monochord zither (đàn bầu). ); the depressed fret guitar can also be used. This entertainment music intended for “amateurs”, it uses the same modes but instilling nuances of sentimentality, corresponding to emotional states.
