Talk with Artist Phan Thanh Liem and get insight into the art of making water puppetry and learn why so many travelers flock to water puppet show
Phan Thanh Liem was born in a family with long tradition of performing water puppet, his generation is the 7th. His hometown is in Rach village, Nam Chan commune, Nam Truc district, Nam Dinh Province – one of the water puppet art origin in Vietnam. His grand-father (artist Phan Van Huyen) was the master of traditional water puppet performance.
Phan Thanh Liem’s father – artist Phan Van Ngai is the professor in training traditional water puppet artists in Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre and some local theartres.He also distributed a lot in researching and creating mobile water puppet stage. Nowadays, many water puppet theatres and groups are using the copyright of mobile temple façade stage designed by him. In addition, the Tễu doll made by him is exhibited in Louvre Museaum in France
The generations of Phan Thanh Liem’s family did distributed a lot to reserve and develop Vietnamese water puppetry untill present time.
Since childhood, Phan Thanh Liem has influenced by family’s tradition of water puppetr. He was taugh directly by his grand-father and his father with secrets of making the puppets and performing art.
After several years, Phan Thanh Liem wondered about a mobile mini stage that is easy to carry to some destinations like: school, family, restaurant, countryside. Moreover, he also study and create new stories of the modern days to educate about traffic safety and evironmental protection.
Phan Thanh Liem has performed with his mobile stage inside and outside Vietnam. Various reporters, televisions from not only Vietnam but also foreigners came to record about him and his art.

- Documents about his mini water puppet show at house

2/ Invite guests to the 4th floor to watch the show by artist Phan Thanh Liem in 30 minutes about traditional and modern stories
3/ After finishing the show, any guests want to know more about the puppets will be introduced and guided by the artist

4/ Then, guests will be introduced about the technology of making the puppets – the paint that the artitst use for who want to make the puppets in his workshop

5/ The artist’s family also offer for guests want to try Vietnamese food and join the local market shopping with them.
